Humberside Firefighters, Officers and Control Staff Reconvene Lobby of Fire Authority in Protest of Cuts to Frontline Service

HUMBERSIDE, ENGLAND--(Marketwire - March 2, 2011) - On Friday 4th March, 1030 hrs at Service Head Quarters in Hessle, Humberside Fire Authority members will reassemble, following their deferred meeting of the 24th January, to vote on proposals which threaten the safety of the public and firefighters. As with the previous meeting, members of the Fire Brigades Union will lobby councillors, hoping that they can make them understand the full implications of the proposals if they were to be accepted at Friday's meeting.

Matt Wrack, General Secretary of the Fire Brigades Union, will be attending to address members of the lobby prior to the fire authority meeting where the vital decisions will be made.

Pete Smith FBU Regional Secretary said:

The bulk of the proposals put forward by management do not offer anything positive to the public or firefighters. They are a lessening of a service which the public rely on in times of extreme trauma and stress. To accept these recommendations is the acceptance of the constructive destruction of a public frontline service. To decimate an emergency service, where lives will ultimately be placed at risk, is both foolhardy and irresponsible. Human lives should never be put at risk just to enable the books to be balanced. Rather than rush the savings through in the first year, every option should be explored in an attempt to maintain a fire and rescue service the public expect as taxpayers. The FBU would urge all members of Humberside Fire Authority to take heed of the public response to the consultation, including all of the signed letters of objection to the proposals.
