Hundreds of Rare Antique Clocks and Pocket Watches to Sell in Alabama Auction

FLORENCE, AL--(Marketwire - September 8, 2009) - Hundreds of rare clocks -- including grandfather, mantel, ship and numerous other styles -- will be sold at auction Thursday, Sept. 24 as Advantage Auction liquidates the extensive collection of longtime clock enthusiast Doug Farley.

"Our father spent more than 30 years building this collection, which includes virtually every type one can imagine. But as a family, we decided that it would be best to place these clocks and pocket watches in the hands of collectors who will understand, preserve and fully appreciate them," said Lauren Knox, one of Farley's three children.

The collection includes a wide range of American and European clocks, including a large group of iron and French mantel clocks, said Ms. Knox. "There's even one that uses water, which was one of the earliest methods of measuring time. I doubt there's any other collection like it in the Southeast, but it's time for us to let it go."

Because of the specialized nature of the collection, Advantage Auction enlisted the help of three separate experts to appraise the items being sold, according to Marold Pigg, president of the company.

"We felt that it was important to fully understand the value of the various items in order to provide sound guidance to the family and to bidders," said Pigg.

The clocks will sell in approximately 250 lots, and online bidding during the live auction will be available by prior arrangement. The auction will begin at noon at the Underwood/Petersville Community Center, with registration beginning at 10:30 a.m. A second auction of other personal property will take place at the family's estate in Florence.
