Hundreds unemployed as Toronto jewellery plant liquidates

Bargains offered to holiday shoppers

Attention: Business/Financial Editor, City Editor, News Editor TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Nov. 13, 2006) - A&A Jewellers Limited, Canada's largest manufacturer of gold and diamond jewellery, has closed its doors, unable to compete with the cheaper labour markets of India and the Far East. Liquidation of the 100,000 square-foot plant in east Toronto, leaves hundreds of long-term staff unemployed.

"For more than 40 years, A&A has been the primary supplier of jewellery to major retailers like Birks, Sears, Wall-Mart and so many other favourite shops, big and small, across the country," says Jacob Parshan, specialist in the field. "Now, the abrupt disappearance of this manufacturer from the marketplace leaves a gaping void, as well as a deep sadness for all those people who relied on A&A for their employment income."

The only bright side amongst the bad news is all the rock-bottom bargains now available on gold, precious stone, and diamond jewellery. "As the gift-giving, holiday season approaches, liquidation is underway, and that means countless, top-quality rings, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, pendants and charms must now be sold at deeply discounted prices," Parshan said.

The Jewellery Liquidation Centre, affiliated with Jewels By Koby, is inviting the public to the A&A factory premises to view the entire, remaining inventory. It's a timely opportunity for those looking to buy gifts, or to find a special item for a special occasion. From now until all the merchandise is sold, go to direct to the A&A factory premises at 1405 Morningside Avenue (at Hwy 401) and at 1111 Finch Ave West from Sunday to Thursday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Friday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The plant is closed Saturdays.
