Hybrid Host Connectivity From Infortrend Enables SAN Tiering, Cost-Effective Remote Replication

Available on Mid-Range ESVA and Entry-Level EonStor DS Storage Solutions

SAN JOSE, CA--(Marketwire - March 15, 2011) -  When it comes to deploying a storage area network (SAN), choosing the appropriate connectivity is one of the most important steps. Fibre Channel (FC) and iSCSI each have their own unique benefits. For example, FC connectivity is ideally suited for demanding applications that require high performance levels, while iSCSI connectivity enables users to take advantage of existing IP networks in the datacenter to consolidate hardware infrastructure, and is ideal for cost-efficient storage.

What if you could have it both ways? Infortrend® (TPE: 2495), the networked storage expert, offers hybrid connectivity of Fibre Channel (FC) and iSCSI on selected storage systems in its mid-range ESVA and entry-level EonStor DS families. With FC and iSCSI combined in a single system, users can achieve consolidated SAN tiering, meeting service level requirements of tier 1 applications on FC SAN and of tier 2 applications on IP SAN.

From a cost perspective, another major advantage of hybrid systems is efficient remote replication. Traditionally, protocol converters are required when users want to replicate data sets between two FC-host storage systems over Ethernet. With the hybrid systems, these converters are no longer necessary to deploy remote replication, as built-in iSCSI ports can be directly connected to the IP network. As a result, disaster recovery plans, which are essential for companies of all sizes, can be implemented at a significantly lower cost.

Thomas Kao, director of product planning at Infortrend, noted, "Hybrid storage systems are an ideal solution for companies that need to control costs and increase datacenter versatility. Infortrend's hybrid systems offer all the high-performance features of pure FC-host systems, while increasing usage flexibility by adding the iSCSI ports. When you combine these benefits with the considerable cost advantages hybrid systems bring to the table, customers truly get a bigger bang for their buck."
