Hydro Ottawa Applauds Enlightened Energy Use at Homestead Properties

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 13, 2009) - As the company wraps up a series of highly successful retrofit initiatives, Homestead Land Holdings Limited is sending a clear message: conservation starts at home. For their efforts to help the environment through more efficient buildings, Hydro Ottawa is recognizing Homestead with this month's 'Companies for Conservation' award.

"With 30 properties and 4,751 suites in the company's Ottawa portfolio, Homestead realized that reducing their buildings' environmental footprint could have a tremendously positive effect on the whole city," said Rosemarie Leclair, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Hydro Ottawa Group of Companies. "With the recent completion of some outstanding initiatives, they have truly established themselves as local conservation leaders."

Thanks to Homestead's recent efficiency investments, 22 of the company's properties in Ottawa were substantially improved. Among the largest of these investments was the installation of 33,890 high-efficiency CFL bulbs across Homestead's Ottawa properties, a program that concluded in April of this year.

In addition, 17 of the Ottawa buildings have been equipped with automation systems to better control boilers, pumps, and air conditioning systems. These new systems have not only resulted in more efficient buildings, they are also more responsive to the comfort needs of building residents.

At a number of Ottawa properties, Homestead also upgraded boiler efficiency, installed variable frequency drives on cooling fan motors, replaced windows with more energy-efficient models, and improved insulation to minimize heating demands.

"Ultimately our motivation is to help the environment, but many of these initiatives also make things easier for our residents," said Jared Sian, Energy Management Specialist at Homestead. "In some buildings, residents pay their own electricity bills, and improved building efficiency will help them to significantly decrease their energy consumption."

The company is already reporting a significant drop in energy use, and will continue to focus on improving building efficiency.

'Companies for Conservation' is an initiative that celebrates the exciting and innovative conservation projects being undertaken by commercial electricity users in Ottawa. The program, which started in October 2007, recognizes one local company or organization for their conservation leadership every month. These companies are making a difference by embodying a true culture of conservation.
