Hydro Ottawa Asks Residents to Take Action for Earth Hour

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 7, 2011) - Today, Mayor Jim Watson announced that the City of Ottawa will participate in Earth Hour for the fourth consecutive year. Hydro Ottawa is calling on its customers to once again take action for one hour on March 26th.

"Earth Hour has become the biggest grass roots environmental movement in history. And here at home, it gives our community the opportunity to celebrate the conservation efforts that we perform all year long," said Hydro Ottawa's President and Chief Executive Officer, Rosemarie Leclair. "As a corporate citizen of one of the most environmentally-minded communities in the country, we're proud to be partnering with the City of Ottawa once again to raise awareness about this year's Earth Hour."

On March 26th between 8:30 and 9:30 pm, Ottawa residents will once again join hundreds of millions of people from all over the world in turning off their lights for this global event. Pioneered by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in Sydney, Australia in 2007, Earth Hour became the most successful voluntary event ever, reaching a remarkable 1.3 billion people in a record 128 countries and territories. More than 10 million Canadians in 300 cities and towns took action last year. Locally, Hydro Ottawa recorded a reduction of 6% in 2010 - enough to power 58 Ottawa homes for an entire month.

"Earth Hour has started a global conversation about how our small actions have a large impact on the environment. It reminds people that they can make Earth Hour every hour by making simple changes to their daily routines," said Rosemarie Leclair. "A sustainable future is possible, and this initiative demonstrates that we have a part to play in making that happen."
