Hydro Ottawa Crews Restore Power to 30,000 Customers

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - April 29, 2011) - Hydro Ottawa crews continue to work to restore power after a severe storm caused more than 400 outages yesterday. After working through the night, crews have successfully restored power to more than 30,000 customers.

"When widespread outages occur, our employees go above and beyond to ensure public safety and get the power back on as soon as possible," said Norm Fraser, Chief Operating Officer. "I am proud of the progress made."

Crews continue to work to restore power to the remaining 16,000 customers affected by outages. In many cases, yesterday's storm downed trees and damaged overhead electrical equipment. More urban hydro poles were damaged yesterday than during the 1998 ice storm. In 68 locations across the city, high voltage wires were damaged and on the ground. Crews are working to ensure public safety by de-energizing and isolating the affected equipment before carrying out permanent repairs to restore power.

As previously reported, the largest impacted areas include:

  • Smyth/Russell Road Area;

  • Village of Casselman;

  • Montreal Road/St. Laurent Area;

  • Rockliffe Park; and

  • Rural Kanata.

These larger outages are being addressed first followed by individual outages. It is expected that there may be individual customers that will continue to be without power over the next 24 to 48 hours.

Hydro Ottawa thanks its customers for their patience and understanding as restoration efforts continue. Customers may report power outages or electrical emergencies 24 hours a day by calling 613-738-0188.

If customers notice fallen power lines, they should stay a good distance away – at least 10 meters (33 feet). Customers and unauthorized contractors should not attempt to clear away any trees or branches that may be touching a power line. It is recommended that customers call 911 immediately.

Updates will be provided as more information becomes available. Information on power outages is also available at www.hydroottawa.com.
