Hydro Ottawa Customers Turned Off the Lights and Stepped Into the Spotlight With Measurable Earth Hour Results

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 26, 2011) - Hydro Ottawa is pleased to report that Ottawa's participation in Earth Hour was a tremendous success, thanks to the overwhelming support of local residents and businesses. Hydro Ottawa measured the city's drop in demand between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. at 43 MW – or 4.5 per cent.

In a show of solidarity, lights were turned off all across Ottawa on Saturday night. From Parliament Hill, to the capital's largest hotels and office towers, and in homes and businesses - residents celebrated Earth Hour with friends and family. Others participated by attending the Canada Science and Technology Museum's Star Party, listening to acoustic music in coffee shops, or quietly reflecting by attending a candlelight vigil on Parliament Hill.

"The message of Earth Hour is that simple actions can make a big difference when it comes to energy conservation and environmental sustainability," said Rosemarie Leclair, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Hydro Ottawa Group of Companies. "Ottawa residents continue to embrace this event and go beyond the hour through their commitment and participation in Hydro Ottawa's conservation programs and initiatives."

Hydro Ottawa once again partnered with the City of Ottawa and other sponsors, including the Ottawa Sun, 24 Hours and EMC community newspapers in promoting Earth Hour in Ottawa.

"As a partner in the City's Earth Hour campaign for the fourth consecutive year, our goal was to encourage participation and awareness across our community. Ottawa residents and businesses joined more than a billion people around the world to celebrate Earth Hour with enthusiasm and creativity," said Leclair. "Hydro Ottawa is proud to have played a role in that once again this year."
