Hydro Ottawa Encourages Residents to Power Down for Earth Hour

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 12, 2010) - With the official announcement today by Mayor Larry O'Brien that the City of Ottawa will once again participate in Earth Hour, Hydro Ottawa is calling on its customers to embrace the darkness once again – for one hour on March 27th.

"Over the past two years, Earth Hour has become a wonderful community celebration of the power of small actions to make a big difference for our environment," said Hydro Ottawa's President and Chief Executive Officer, Rosemarie Leclair. "We're proud to be partnering with the City of Ottawa once again to raise awareness of the importance of energy conservation."

On March 27th between 8:30 and 9:30 pm, Ottawa residents will once again join millions of people from all over the world in turning off their lights for this global event, which was pioneered by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in Sydney, Australia in 2007. Last year, hundreds of millions of people in nearly 4,000 cities and towns participated – leading the WWF to declare Earth Hour 2009 the largest environmental movement in history. Locally, Hydro Ottawa recorded a reduction of 6% - enough to power 58 Ottawa homes for an entire month.

"Sixty minutes may seem like baby steps when it comes to energy conservation, but when it comes to raising awareness, we see it as a big leap forward," said Rosemarie Leclair. "It reminds people that there are things they can do every day to help create a more sustainable future."
