Hydro Ottawa Launches Brighter Tomorrows Targeted Community Investment Fund

Hydro Ottawa Partners With United Way Ottawa To Implement New Funding Project

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 10, 2011) - Hydro Ottawa announced today the launch of a new $100,000 funding initiative called the Brighter Tomorrows Fund. The fund, which will be administered in coordination with United Way Ottawa, will enable frontline agencies that serve people who are homeless or at risk of being homeless to invest in energy-efficient technologies or products. By supporting projects such as the replacement of old windows, the installation of high-efficiency heating and cooling systems or the procurement of new and more energy-efficient appliances, the fund will help agencies reduce energy costs, improve their facilities and provide more comfortable living spaces.

"The Brighter Tomorrows Fund is more than just a project to help agencies reduce energy costs," said Rosemarie Leclair, President and CEO, Hydro Ottawa. "It's about human dignity and creating comfortable living conditions for some of the city's most vulnerable people. We hope that through energy renovation projects such as replacing poorly insulated windows in a women's shelter, we can ensure that people who turn to the shelter in time of need are kept warm in the winter months."

Hydro Ottawa has been a long-time supporter of United Way and sought to strengthen alignment of its community initiatives with its business to highlight expertise in energy management and to represent the company's core values. United Way developed a solution tailored to Hydro Ottawa's corporate social responsibility objectives.

"This program is an example of our Targeted Community Investment work, where we partner with donors to create tailored investments that give donors a clear line of sight to results that are important to them," said Michael Allen, President and CEO, United Way. "The Brighter Tomorrows Fund aligns well with Hydro Ottawa's corporate objectives while advancing achievement of United Way's community goals."

United Way will assist with implementation and manage the fund. Hydro Ottawa will provide the funding and Hydro Ottawa employees will participate in the selection of recipient agencies.

A call for proposals is now under way, with agencies being asked to submit their proposals to United Way before March 31, 2011. For more information on the Brighter Tomorrows Fund and details regarding the call for proposals, visit www.unitedwayottawa.ca or call 613-228-6700.
