Hydro Ottawa Marks National Day of Mourning With Company-Wide Event

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - April 27, 2007) - Today Hydro Ottawa Limited will pay tribute to those who have lost their lives on the job, suffered injury, or experienced illness due to work-related causes. National Day of Mourning (April 28), has been marked by various events across Canada since 1991.

More than 500 Hydro Ottawa employees will observe the National Day of Mourning at a company-wide event with guest speaker John Martin. In 1984, John was seriously injured in an industrial accident and received chemical burns to more than 70% of his body, including both eyes. Through medical technology and sheer determination, John has overcome his life changing injury.

"The Day of Mourning is an opportunity for public reflection on, and renewed commitment to, workplace safety that affects all employees, contractors, and visitors" said Rosemarie Leclair, President and Chief Executive Officer, Hydro Ottawa Holding. "At Hydro Ottawa, workplace safety is our number one priority. Our goal of zero injuries underscores this commitment."

The recipients of Hydro Ottawa's three safety scholarships will also be announced as part of the ceremony. The Gordon McNally, Ted Watson and the Romauld Rolland Memorial Scholarships commemorate three of Hydro Ottawa's employees who lost their lives in workplace accidents. These special annual bursaries of $1,000 are awarded to the son or daughter of a Hydro Ottawa employee who is enrolled in full-time study at a college or university. To be eligible for a scholarship, a student must have completed the Ottawa Safe Communities Network's "Passport to Safety" program.
