Hydro Ottawa Recognized for Innovative Conservation Program

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 10, 2009) - Hydro Ottawa has been recognized by its peers, winning the Electricity Distributors Association (EDA) Innovation Award in the Public Relations category for creating an original program that promotes energy conservation in Ottawa's business community.

"Companies for Conservation" is an initiative to celebrate the exciting and innovative conservation projects being undertaken by large commercial electricity users in Ottawa. The program, which started in October 2007, recognizes one local company or organization for their conservation leadership every month. These companies are making a difference by embodying a true culture of conservation.

"We're very proud of this innovative program, which has been tremendously successful in promoting energy conservation in Ottawa's business community," said Rosemarie Leclair, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Hydro Ottawa Group of Companies. "The basic insight behind the program is that energy efficiency and conservation make good business sense. There are many Ottawa businesses and organizations doing creative and innovative things to improve their energy efficiency, and reduce their environmental footprint at the same time. Recognizing their efforts has proven to be a very effective way to create broader awareness of the solid business case for energy conservation."

Hydro Ottawa was presented with the award at the EDA's annual general meeting, which took place in Toronto this week. The EDA is the voice of Ontario's local electricity distribution companies.

Companies for Conservation was developed exclusively by Hydro Ottawa staff as a way to strengthen relationships with the company's largest customers and promote responsible energy use. The program increases awareness in Ottawa's business community of the financial and environmental benefits of energy conservation. By highlighting local success stories, the program also showcases the technologies and incentives that exist to help companies reduce their environmental footprint, while improving their bottom lines.

Originally slated to run for one year, Hydro Ottawa has extended Companies for Conservation indefinitely due to an overwhelmingly positive response within the business community.

To date, Hydro Ottawa's Conservation and Demand Management initiatives have achieved nearly 100 million kilowatt hours in energy savings - enough to power 11,000 homes for a year.
