Hydro Ottawa Recognizes Giant Tiger as an Energy Conservation Champion

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 14, 2011) - Hydro Ottawa is proud to recognize Giant Tiger as this month's Companies for Conservation award recipient. Recently, Giant Tiger completed a number of electricity retrofit projects in eight of its Ottawa store locations, including its head office, saving an incredible 400,000 kWh of power annually; the equivalent of powering 47 average homes for a year.

"Through its dedication to fostering green initiatives, Giant Tiger continues to demonstrate a commitment to the Ottawa community by becoming a corporate leader in conservation," said Roger Marsh, Hydro Ottawa's Chief Energy Management Officer. "Conservation is a priority Hydro Ottawa shares with Giant Tiger and we are thrilled to align ourselves with like-minded community businesses to achieve this mutual goal."

Giant Tiger applied over $25,000 in grant funding it received from the saveONenergy Retrofit Program to install energy-efficient lighting in stores across Ottawa and Casselman and light emitting diodes (LED) lamps in their home office parking lot. Giant Tiger also expanded the retrofit to its grocery section by installing LED lighting strips in vertical freezers and using improved insulating lids for its freezers. As a result of these retrofit projects, Giant Tiger expects to save approximately $45,000 per year.

"Giant Tiger's commitment to serving our communities and reducing our carbon footprint is just one way we can give back," said Andy Gross, President and CEO, Giant Tiger. "Our electricity retrofits help us lower costs so we can continue to pass savings on to our customers." Giant Tiger has initiated a range of green initiatives including recycling, repurposing various materials and using solar energy at its Ottawa distribution centre.

Hydro Ottawa's Companies for Conservation program recognizes local companies and organizations for their innovative conservation projects. Giant Tiger joins a growing list of business leaders who have also been recognized for their green achievements. Past recipients include: Toss Salon, the Rideau Centre, the Ottawa Catholic School Board, the Ottawa Hospital and the University of Ottawa.
