Hydro Ottawa Recognizes The Ottawa Hospital as a Conservation Leader

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 12, 2008) - The Ottawa Hospital is known for the major role it plays as a local health care provider and champion of the health of the community. Now it's taking the environment's health under its wing, too. In recognition of their efforts, Hydro Ottawa has awarded the hospital this month's 'Companies for Conservation' award.

"The Ottawa Hospital should be commended for extending their 'healthcare' to include the health of our environment, by helping to create a conservation culture in Ottawa. They are a true environmental steward and leader. On behalf of Hydro Ottawa I am honoured to include them in our Companies for Conservation Honour Roll," says Rosemarie Leclair, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Hydro Ottawa Group of Companies.

The Ottawa Hospital has recently undertaken a number of projects that reduce their electricity and gas consumption and increase their energy efficiency. Upgrades encompass a number of improvements across the Civic, General and Riverside campuses.

The $17 million in upgrades included the replacement of the Civic Campus' main boiler, originally installed in 1924. This boiler provides steam and heat for the entire Civic Campus and its replacement significantly increased energy efficiency.

Further efficiencies were achieved through the replacement of several chillers, the installation of a new building automation system, and lighting upgrades. Yearly electricity savings as a result of these upgrades are estimated to be over $1.2 million, translating into the reduction of more than 8,185 tons of greenhouse gases.

As part of the project, the hospital reduced its environmental footprint by recycling its existing lighting tubes and ballasts saving 9.8 tons of glass, and diverting 123 kg of aluminum, 154 kg of phosphorous and 1.02 kg of mercury from landfill.

"We take pride in our commitment to energy conservation and it's rewarding to be acknowledged by Hydro Ottawa for our efforts," says Brock Marshall, Director of Engineering and Operations for The Ottawa Hospital. "By increasing our energy efficiency and reducing our carbon footprint we're seeing not only operational savings, but enormous benefits hospital-wide."

'Companies for Conservation' is an initiative to celebrate the exciting and innovative conservation projects being undertaken by commercial electricity users in Ottawa. The program, which started in October 2007, recognizes one local company or organization for their conservation leadership every month. These companies are making a difference by embodying a true culture of conservation.
