Hydro Ottawa Wins Best Advanced Metering Initiative Award for North America

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 11, 2008) - Hydro Ottawa Limited has been recognized by a panel of utility peers from around the world with the Utility Planning Network's (UPN) 2008 Best Advanced Metering Initiative Award (North America) for a Municipal Utility or Electric Cooperative. Hydro Ottawa was presented with the award at the Association's annual conference, which took place in Atlanta, Georgia this week.

Each year, UPN's Utility Peer Award Program recognizes exceptional metering initiatives by utilities from around the world. With an international panel of industry professionals judging all entrants, the acknowledgment serves as high praise for Hydro Ottawa's Smart Metering Initiative.

Since 2006, Hydro Ottawa has installed more than 230,000 Smart Meters throughout its service territory. Currently, 210,000 of those Smart Meters deliver data to Hydro Ottawa's Customer Information System (CIS), eliminating the need for manual readings. This represents the largest operational Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) network in Canada. Customers benefit from Hydro Ottawa's ability to read their meters without accessing their homes, and to process changes from one occupant to the next more quickly and seamlessly.

"Hydro Ottawa is proud to be recognized by its peers from around the world with this important award. We're proud to be playing a leading role in one of the biggest changes our industry has seen in many years - the transition to Advanced Metering," says Rosemarie Leclair, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Hydro Ottawa Group of Companies. "The success of our Smart Metering Initiative (SMI) rests with Hydro Ottawa's skilled SMI Project Team, who have done an exceptional job keeping our installation costs per unit among the lowest in Ontario, and recognizing the opportunities for customer service enhancements from the very early stages of the project."

Ontario's Smart Meter initiative is designed to encourage more efficient use of Ontario's electricity supply. The Government of Ontario has passed legislation requiring the installation of Smart Meters across the province by the end of 2010.
