I Can For Kids

The effects of childhood hunger are devastating.

I Can for Kids, a new food and fundraising campaign, launches at the Calgary Food Bank

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwired - May 25, 2015) - If it takes a village to raise a child, then Sutton Garner wants you to know kids need your help - 8,000 to be exact. After discovering that the majority of low-income children who rely on school breakfast and lunch programs can go hungry during the summer break, this 11 year-old grade six student created I Can for Kids. In partnership with the Calgary Food Bank, this food drive and fundraising campaign aims to provide over 20,000 meals to kids in Calgary and Cochrane over July and August.

Food is fuel. Missing out on necessary nutrition during the summer can put a child up to two months academically behind their peers at the start of the school year. "Sutton is a smart, ambitious kid with a big heart," her mom Bobbi Turko enthuses. "She knows that healthy kids learn better and believes everyone should have the opportunity to realize their full potential. Every kid deserves a care-free summer and with I Can for Kids and the generosity of the community we'll help them have a much healthier start to their school year."

To meet this goal, Save On Foods will have $5 pre-packed donations available through the months of June and July. Each $5 pre-pack contains two kid-friendly meals. The Calgary Food Bank will work with Wood's Homes to distribute food packs to children in need through their community and summer programs.
