IABC Capital Awards Gala Recognizes Excellence in Communications

Edmonton communicators win accolades during a night of fortune and magic

EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(Marketwired - May 28, 2013) -

Mayor Stephen Mandel and the city's top communicators gathered on Friday May 24 at the Telus World of Science for IABC Edmonton's annual Capital Awards Gala. The evening's theme of fortune and magic rang true for the night's winners.

"This year's awards gala has been our most prestigious yet. The 58 award winners all won for projects evaluated by top communications professionals across Canada," says IABC Executive Vice-President, Vania Asenova. "Edmonton's talent is something to celebrate. There was magic in the air all night so the theme was very fitting."

In the External Communications Program category, awards went to The DAGNY Partnership - City of Leduc, DDB Canada - Alberta Health and ATB Financial. In the External/Community Events category, an award went to the University of Alberta-Office of Advancement, Capital Power, DDB Canada-Art Gallery of Alberta, Calder Bateman Communications and White Box Communications.

In the Internal Communications Programs category, awards went to Alberta Blue Cross, Alberta Health Services and Capital Power Corporate Communications. For Internal Events, awards went to ATCO Gas and the Alberta Motor Association.

In the Marketing and Advertising Campaigns category, awards went to DDB Canada-Alberta Health, PCL Constructors Inc., Calder Bateman Communications and Berlin Advertising and Public Relations.

In the Ongoing Tactics category, awards went to Honeywell Process Solutions, Covenant Health, Capital Power Corporate Communications, Alberta Blue Cross, Calder Bateman Communications, Covenant Health and ATB Financial. In the One-Time Tactics category, awards went to ATCO Gas/ATCO Electric (2), Marcomm Works, FREE Advertising (2), Alberta Blue Cross, DDB Canada (4), Alberta Pork and The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (2).

In the Visual Communications category, awards went to Calder Bateman Communications (3), Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission, Canadian Patient Safety Institute, Alberta Blue Cross (4), FREE Advertising (7), RED the Agency (2) and Port Alberta.

In the Student Entry category, awards went to Jacquie Beasse, Josie Hammond-Thrasher, Angela Saveraux, Vivian Tran, Tannis Zuk and Gordon Wickstrom for their Digital Communications Plan and to Josie Hammond-Thrasher, Aleesha Jex, Tannis Zuk, Vivian Tran and Brenda Hardy for their IMC Plan.

In addition to the aforementioned categories, IABC Edmonton recognized three individuals with Awards of Distinction. The Capital Communicator of the Year went to Mayor Stephen Mandel. This award recognizes a person in a non-communications role who exhibits a commitment to communication in their organization, leads by example, and values the hard work of communications. Communicator of the Year went to Tina Thomas of the Edmonton Public Library. This award recognizes an individual who exhibits excellence in communication, whether communicating to a handful of people or to thousands. Award winners are professional, ethical, and effective, and have demonstrated leadership. Member of the Year went to Julianna Veldtman of White Box Communications. This award recognizes an IABC member who has made major contributions to the chapter and membership through their volunteer activities or support for the chapter.
