IBM, Juniper and Solarflare Achieve the Lowest Latency and Highest Message Rates With 10 Gigabit Ethernet

Vendors Achieve Record-Breaking STAC Benchmarks With Their Best-of-Breed Ethernet Products

IRVINE, CA--(Marketwire - February 24, 2011) - Solarflare, the 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) pioneer, today announced the results of a recently completed multi-vendor benchmark test with Juniper and IBM. The vendors used the STAC-M2™ Benchmark to measure the messaging performance of the solution stack. With a traffic load, the mean latency of the solution did not exceed 10 microseconds, while the standard deviation of the latency was near zero. At the highest tested rate of 2.3 million messages/second, the mean latency of the solution was just 14 microseconds. These low latency and high message rate results beat any previously published STAC-M2 test using 10GbE. The tests were audited by STAC® (The Securities Technology Analysis Center). The solution under test consisted of:

  • Solarflare OpenOnload Application Acceleration Middleware
  • Solarflare SFN5122F 10GbE Adapters
  • IBM WMQ Low Latency Messaging v2.4.0.2
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS 5.5
  • 2x Quad-Core Intel Xeon X5570 2.93 GHz
  • IBM x3550 M2 Model Servers
  • Juniper Networks QFX3500 10Gb Ethernet Switch with Junos 11.1

All of the above products are available to financial firms today. Solarflare's OpenOnload middleware, IBM's multi-threaded WLLM, and Juniper's low-latency switch contributed significantly to increasing the application-messaging rate, while maintaining low latency and very tight jitter.

The STAC-M2 test measures the ability of a solution to handle real-time market data in a variety of configurations. "Leading trading firms on the STAC Benchmark™ Council approved the STAC-M2 Benchmark specifications as the meaningful, transparent way for vendors to demonstrate the performance of a high-speed messaging stack," said Jack Gidding, associate director at STAC. "Achieving both low latency and high throughput in these benchmarks is not easy. The test harness involves large market data messages, usage patterns ranging from black-box trading to enterprise distribution, and real-world challenges, such as slow consumers. We are pleased that IBM, Juniper and Solarflare subjected their products to these tests."

For this STAC-M2 Benchmark, Solarflare's server adapters were installed in the servers along with Solarflare's OpenOnload application acceleration middleware. OpenOnload speeds up messaging and other types of applications, while reducing the processing work required of the host server. OpenOnload thereby simultaneously reduces the application's latency, while increasing its performance; all while maintaining complete compatibility with standard TCP/IP and Ethernet protocols. In addition, because of the unique tuning features of OpenOnload, the participating vendors were able to configure the multi-core IBM System x3550 M2 Model 7946 servers so that all interrupts and background processing tasks were run on a single core. OpenOnload was used to enable the application threads to run without contention with each other. This left all other cores in the IBM server completely free to run application code without any interruption, cross talk or congestion. This elegant division of labor among the cores achieved by OpenOnload contributed significantly to the very low latency and very low jitter of the total solution stack.
