ICSA Labs Announces Charter Members of Network IPS Product Developers Consortium

16 Network IPS Vendors Join Consortium Facilitated by ICSA Labs

MECHANICSBURG, PA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- March 29, 2005 -- ICSA Labs®, an independent division of Cybertrust® Inc. and the global leader in information security product certification, announced today the formation of the Network Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS) Product Developers (NIPD) consortium. The NIPD consortium was created to develop a standard set of functional and assurance criteria for certifying network intrusion prevention technology and to provide a third-party information source to help the IPS user community select and effectively implement IPS products.

The genesis of the consortium comes from a meeting attended by leading vendors in the Network IPS market and facilitated by ICSA Labs on February 17th in San Francisco. As a direct result of this meeting, the Network IPS vendors unanimously decided on the need for a consortium whose primary goals would be to educate end users about Network IPS products and their role in a layered network security defense, increase the adoption of Network IPS technology and create publicly vetted, objective, and credible security criteria against which Network IPS products can be tested and certified.

The charter members of the Network IPS Product Developers consortium are: Check Point® Software Technologies Ltd.; Cisco Systems, Inc.; Internet Security Systems (ISS); Intoto, Inc.; iPolicy Networks, Inc.; Juniper Networks, Inc.; McAfee, Inc.; NitroSecurity; Radware; SecureWorks; SecurityMetrics; Stonesoft Corporation; Symantec Corp.; Third Brigade Inc.; TippingPoint, a division of 3Com; and Top Layer Networks, Inc.

"McAfee is pleased to be a charter member of the ICSA Labs Network IPS Product Developers consortium. With network IPS now established as a mainstream security technology, ICSA Labs' efforts in this area are both timely and valuable in providing enterprise customers with an additional level of confidence when selecting IPS solutions. As such, we are committed to working with leading, third-party organizations like ICSA Labs," said Vimal Solanki, director of product marketing for network security solutions at McAfee, Inc. "With the help of independent third-party reviews, we will work to establish next-generation network IPS test standards and methodologies that reflect today's mission-critical user requirements. We look forward to collaborating with ICSA Labs and other charter members of the consortium to achieve this objective."

The Network IPS Product Developers consortium plans to hold its charter meeting in Las Vegas during the first week of May at the Networld + Interop Conference. At that meeting, the charter members will finalize the draft set of criteria discussed during the stakeholders meeting in February. Once completed, ICSA Labs will begin testing Network IPS products using this criteria document, and will publicize the criteria on its web site as a means to solicit further input. The final version of the criteria will be posted immediately following the initial round of Network IPS product testing, expected to be completed in the fourth quarter.

"As IPS has emerged as the most effective security solution for pre-emptive security, there has also been a growing number of misperceptions of how IPS can and should be defined," said Mark Butler, director of product marketing at Internet Security Systems. "By working through this consortium of reputable third-party experts, we will help set a core definition of criteria for IPS that will ultimately help businesses more effectively evaluate their needs and make informed purchasing decisions."

In addition to criteria development and a testing program, the NIPD, facilitated by ICSA Labs, will develop user guides, white papers, and tools to help educate and enable end users to better understand and select products that meet their functionality and security needs.

"TippingPoint is proud to be a charter member of this group," said TippingPoint CTO Marc Willebeek-LeMair. "After three years of deployment in customer environments, IPS is a mature technology. However, there are still misconceptions and confusion about product requirements, testing criteria and how it fits in with other security technologies. The ICSA Labs Network IPS Product Developers consortium will help educate the market and determine standards."

"Our goal is to offer the purchaser and end user of security products a credible source that can provide the information they are looking for," said George Japak, Vice President of ICSA Labs. "ICSA Labs, with the NIPD consortium, is in a unique position to meet these needs."
