IFAW Holds Premier McGuinty to his Promise on Spring Bear Hunt Ban

Attention: Assignment Editor, Environment Editor, News Editor, Science Editor TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Nov. 18, 2005) - The International Fund for Animal Welfare today announced it will fight to ensure Premier Dalton McGuinty keeps his promise and maintains the ban on the spring bear hunt, despite renewed efforts for its return.

"Ontario Liberals support the end of the spring bear hunt in Ontario," Premier McGuinty wrote in a letter to IFAW in 2003. "We were deeply concerned that was leaving many cubs orphaned," the letter also states.

IFAW's Campaigner Rob Sinclair says the Premier has personally assured him of his commitment on this issue. "The Premier has told me on several occasions that he still remains opposed to the cruelty of policies such as the spring bear hunt. IFAW is dedicated to defending this view and holding the Liberal government to its commitment."

NDP leader Howard Hampton, the only provincial leader to represent a northern Ontario riding, has also consistently opposed the reinstatement of the hunt. Progressive Conservative leader John Tory, who has announced he will contest a Toronto riding in the next election, is the only party leader who has not taken a firm position in opposition to the hunt.

Eleven public opinion polls released between 1998 and 2003 on the issue of the spring bear hunt have shown consistent opposition to the hunt across Ontario. The polls showed that four of five Ontario residents are opposed its reintroduction.

"IFAW will do whatever is required to ensure the ban on the spring bear hunt is upheld, and that the views of the 80 per cent of Ontario residents, who oppose practices like the spring bear hunt, are represented and respected," Sinclair said
