Ikanos Partners With ASSIA, Leader in DSL Dynamic Spectrum Management

Companies Ink Patent Licensing and Co-Marketing Deal for Vectored DSL Products

PARIS--(Marketwire - September 7, 2009) - Broadband World Forum Europe 2009 -- Ikanos Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: IKAN), the leading provider of advanced broadband semiconductor and software products for the digital home, and ASSIA, Inc., the leading provider of Dynamic Spectrum Management (DSM) technology designed to improve the data rates, reach and overall performance of Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) systems, today announced a partnership to accelerate the deployment of vectored DSL technology. Under terms of the agreement, Ikanos receives a license to ASSIA's essential DSM patents and certain technology for the development of vectored DSL products -- also known as DSM Level 3 -- capable of delivering speeds of 100 Mbps and greater over existing copper loops. In addition, the two companies will co-market each others' products to the network equipment and service provider industries.

"ASSIA is recognized throughout the telecommunications industry as one of the most influential and innovative technology providers, especially when it comes to maximizing DSL network performance," said Michael Gulett, president and CEO at Ikanos. "As a result of our relationship with ASSIA, Ikanos expects to accelerate the time to market for a new generation of products that capitalize on DSM technology's advantages, setting higher standards for performance, stability and reliability."

DSM enables service providers to maximize the rate and reach of their DSL services, while minimizing operating costs, through the automatic optimization of DSL networks and advanced, root-cause diagnostics analyses. DSM Level 3 (DSM 3) techniques can enhance and extend very-high-data-rate DSL (VDSL) downstream data rates in excess of 100 Mbps and upstream data rates in excess of 50 Mbps for fiber-fed DSL access multiplexers (DSLAMs) in the neighborhood, at the curb and in the building. DSM technology also enables service providers to further extend the useful life of the copper infrastructure and compete effectively from a performance and economic perspective with more expensive passive optical networking (PON) and hybrid fiber coax (HFC) services.

"ASSIA is pleased to work with Ikanos to advance the capabilities of DSM and DSL products and their availability," said John Cioffi, ASSIA's chairman and CEO. "Ikanos' endorsing implementation of ASSIA's DSM 3 vectoring technology can more rapidly advance the deployment of higher speed digital subscriber lines, enabling service providers worldwide to improve service and reduce operating costs. As vectored DSL standards emerge, chip vendors, such as Ikanos, are making it possible for service providers to realize the full potential of the technology by ensuring cross platform support, full management data access and standardized management interfaces."

DSM 3 is one of the three levels of DSM defined in the ATIS DSM Technical Report (ATIS PP-0600007) for managing noise, power and crosstalk in DSL systems of all types -- ADSL1, ADSL2/2+ and VDSL -- in both single service provider and unbundled, multiple service provider environments. Complementary standardization efforts have been completed in the ITU-T and the Broadband Forum, with ongoing standardization efforts underway for advanced DSM technologies.
