IMG Academies' Lisicki Sets Record at WTA's Family Circle Cup

BRADENTON, FL--(Marketwire - April 20, 2009) - Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy/IMG Academies student Sabine Lisicki this past weekend won her first WTA tournament, becoming the lowest-ranked player ever to win the 36-year-old Family Circle Cup.

The 19-year-old Lisicki, who entered the tournament ranked No. 63 worldwide, defeated then No. 12-ranked Caroline Wozniacki 6-2, 6-4 Sunday in Charleston, SC. Lisicki also beat No. 5-ranked Venus Williams, No. 57-ranked Elena Vesnina and No. 13-ranked Marion Bartoli in the tournament.

"I've worked so hard over the last couple of weeks and months," said Lisicki, "and it's finally paying off. I knew I had the game to beat those players, and now I think I'm mature enough to win whole tournaments."

The German-born Lisicki joins a list of Family Circle Cup winners that includes Chris Evert, Steffi Graf, Martina Hingis, Venus Williams and many others. The win catapults her to No. 43 in the world rankings.

"After all of the hard work and dedication that Sabine's put in during her four years here at The Academy," said Bollettieri, "she is very deserving to get a tournament title. She is an example that hard work and dedication does pay off. I have no doubts that she'll continue to improve and show that she can win again and again."

Lisicki has spent her time at the NBTA with her father/coach, Richard, refining her game with Bollettieri and working with some of the top trainers in the world from the IMG Performance Institute.

"Sabine is a classic example of following the process at IMG Academies and the IMG Performance Institute," said Trevor Moawad, Director of IPI. "She has taken complete ownership of her mental, physical, nutritional and recovery elements. Sabine has all of the tools, and she continues to do all of the little things to get better."
