Impermium Secures $1 Million in Seed Financing

Eight Prominent VC Firms and Angel Investor Groups Come Together to Tackle Spam and Abuse on Social Websites; Impermium Reaches 50M Users Milestone

PALO ALTO, CA--(Marketwire - Jun 27, 2011) - Impermium today announced a $1 million seed financing round, which will enable the company to accelerate development of the world's first service to deliver "anti-spam for the social web."

Investors participating in the self-led funding round include Accel Partners, AOL Ventures, Charles River Ventures, Freestyle Capital, Greylock Discovery Fund and Morado Ventures. Angel groups Archimedes Capital and Embarcadero Ventures also contributed to the round.

"Fraudulent users and spammy user-generated content are huge problems threatening nearly every site on the Internet," said George Zachary, partner at Charles River Ventures. "We're investing in Impermium because we think it has a great, experienced team and the most viable technology approach. If Impermium gets it right, not only will it become a large-scale company, but it will also provide essential cyber-security defense to the world's most prominent sites."

Now that 67 percent of social network users report receiving spam in the past year(1), consumer-facing web sites are increasingly looking to Impermium to defend against spam and other forms of cyber-security abuse. Just three months into its beta release, the company now protects more than 50 million users worldwide.

Impermium was founded by former Yahoo! "Spam Czar" Mark Risher, Vish Ramarao, and Naveen Jamal. Prior to Impermium, the co-founders led the anti-spam and security group at Yahoo! Mail, where they drastically reduced spam and fraud for Yahoo! customers through sophisticated detetection algorithms and machine-learning technologies. The company's material and presentations can be found on the Allied Front blog.

The Impermium social spam and abuse defense platform is now available in limited beta. The company is working with numerous publishers across the social web, defending against attacks in the areas of spammy user-generated content, fraudulent registrations, account hacking, stolen passwords, and related forms of abuse.
