Impinj's Speedway(TM) Gen 2 RFID Reader Enables New NEC Inventory Control System

Innovative Gate System Boosts RFID Tag Read Rates and Supply Chain Operational Efficiency

SEATTLE, WA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- December 4, 2006 -- Leading Gen 2 RFID solution provider, Impinj, Inc., today announced that NEC Corporation is deploying Impinj's Speedway™ reader in a pioneering RFID system that significantly increases RFID tag throughput in demanding manufacturing and inventory control applications.

Scheduled for worldwide availability before the end of 2006, NEC's RFID gate system combines NEC's proprietary radio wave reflection technology with Impinj's high-performance RFID readers. The gate system, which interrogates multiple RFID tags simultaneously to produce accurate supply chain data, targets various RFID-enabled supply chain management applications such as inspection systems in manufacturing lines and inventory control systems.

"We are very pleased that NEC is deploying our Speedway reader in their revolutionary RFID system," said Dimitri Desmons, vice president of RFID marketing at Impinj. "The tag throughput rates and data accuracy achieved with the combination of Impinj's proven technology and NEC's innovation significantly benefit the growing number of RFID-based supply chain management systems."

"Impinj and NEC share a common goal to deliver the highest performance, most reliable RFID technology that dramatically improves supply chain operations," said Kazunari Egami, General Manager of NEC's Control Systems Division. "Impinj's Speedway reader is an ideal platform to support that goal because Speedway exhibits remarkable performance, is guaranteed to be interoperable with other certified RFID hardware and is easy to integrate into innovative solutions such as NEC's new gate system."

Impinj's Speedway reader addresses the two most important RFID performance criteria for supply chain environments -- high tag throughput rates and high read reliability. The Speedway reader achieves superior read reliability with throughput exceeding 1000 tags per second in typical supply chain environments and 200 tags per second in dense reader environments with up to eight interfering readers. The Speedway reader also features a unique mono-static antenna design that delivers the industry's highest performance while substantially reducing deployment cost and complexity compared to conventional alternatives. Available now, the Speedway reader carries both EPCglobal's Gen 2 Conformance Certification mark and EPCglobal's Gen 2 Interoperability Certification mark.
