Improving Indoor Air Quality Key to Breaking 'Sickness Cycle'

HEPA air filter technology helps fight seasonal airborne bacteria, viruses and outdoor pollutants that make their way into homes and offices

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 25, 2009) - Given the amount of time Canadians spend indoors, High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters may be one of the best tools for families to use as they fight an ongoing sickness cycle and brace for the second wave of the H1N1 flu pandemic.

"Poor indoor air quality can be caused by airborne contaminants like dust, inadequate ventilation, chemicals, outdoor pollutants and high humidity levels that lead to mould or bacteria growth," says Bryan MacDonald, indoor air quality specialist for Electrolux Home Care Products. "Add seasonal bacteria and viruses like H1N1 to this list and it's easy to see how a family's health can suffer throughout the winter months."

According to Health Canada, Canadians spend close to 90 per cent of their time indoors - and that percentage increases in the colder fall and winter months. Further studies by Health Canada and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency show indoor air can be six to 10 times more polluted than outdoor air.

Electrolux has recently revamped its indoor air quality portal, www.myIAQ.ca, which provides information on HEPA technology and Electrolux products. The site also features an IAQ Test, designed to educate consumers about how changes to their daily habits can contribute to a healthier lifestyle and better indoor air.

HEPA filters have been proven to prevent the spread of airborne bacterial and viral organisms and infection. HEPA filters remove at least 99.97 per cent of airborne particles 0.3 micrometers in diameter (a micron is 300 times smaller than the thickness of a single human hair). About 80 to 90 per cent of particles coughed and sneezed out are 6 micrometers and above in diameter.

Electrolux distributes several product lines for residential and commercial use with HEPA filter technology. Designed to create a safer and healthier indoor environment, particles are reduced dramatically within 24 hours.

"These products allow us to satisfy a growing demand among consumers who are concerned about the implications of indoor air quality on their health."
