Improving International Development Cooperation Between Canada and the Republic of Korea

BUSAN, SOUTH KOREA--(Marketwire - Nov. 30, 2011) - Today, the Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of International Cooperation, announced that the Government of Canada and the Government of the Republic of Korea have agreed to work together to strengthen cooperation on international development.

"Canada and the Republic of Korea will build on the strong working relationship we have in many developing countries to address urgent global challenges and poverty reduction," said Minister Oda. "Both countries are committed to common goals of aid effectiveness, transparency and accountability to ensure our aid will be more effective and achieve a greater development impact."

Minister Oda and the Republic of Korea's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Kim Sung-Hwan today signed a letter of intent to develop a Memorandum of Understanding between Canada and Korea, during the Fourth High Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness (HLF4) being held in Busan, South Korea. Development actors from around the world have come together at HLF4 to review global progress in improving the impact and effectiveness of aid, and make commitments that set a new agenda for development.

"Both Canada and the Republic of Korea agree that by working together in targeted areas we can increase the impact of our development efforts," added Minister Oda.

Canada and the Republic of Korea will explore opportunities for greater international development cooperation, as part of a global effort to forge new and inclusive partnerships to make aid more effective in reducing poverty - a key objective of the HLF4 in Busan.
