Impulse Point and Dell Join Forces to Help Northern Arizona University Improve Network Security and Reduce Help Desk Support Costs

Moving to Impulse Point SafeConnect™ From Cisco Clean Access Allowed Northern Arizona University to Reclaim 50 Hours per Month for IT Staff Among Other Measurable Benefits

TAMPA, FL--(Marketwire - March 7, 2011) - Impulse Point, provider of the industry's most scalable and easiest to deploy and maintain Network Access Control (NAC) solution, today announced that Northern Arizona University has successfully deployed its SafeConnect™ NAC to replace NAU's existing installation of Cisco® NAC. Impulse Point SafeConnect now delivers to the university enhanced security, reduced help desk support calls and greatly reduced NAC administration requirements for its IT staff. For complete details, please download the case study at http://www.impulse.com/downloads/Dell_Impulse_Northern_AZ.pdf.

With more than 25,000 students and 3,800 staff and faculty, Northern Arizona University previously relied on Cisco Clean Access NAC for network security in its residential housing. Infrequent and time consuming product updates meant that students using brand-new operating systems and anti-virus software had to be exempted -- creating a significant security gap and undesirable end user experiences. In addition, the solution ran on 21 separate servers and a single failure would bring down the entire network for a residence hall. This in-line network design resulted in frequent downtime for students and inefficient administration and maintenance for IT staff. As issues with malware and the cost of management began to spiral out of control, the university realized a change needed to be made.

As the university evaluated its NAC options, its technology partner, Dell, recommended SafeConnect NAC from Dell Preferred Partner, Impulse Point.

"Impulse Point has exceeded my expectations," said John Campbell, director of academic computing, Northern Arizona University. "I've worked with a lot of vendors, and I'm hard to please. But I've been very, very happy, not only with the strategic design of this solution, but also with the deployment and the response that we get anytime we need help. The combination of SafeConnect software on Dell hardware is performing extremely well for us."

Now running Impulse Point SafeConnect on just three Dell PowerEdge servers, Northern Arizona University's IT staff and students are reaping major new enhancements and benefits, including:

  • 50 hours/month reclaimed for IT staff on NAC administration and maintenance
  • 20-30 hours/week reclaimed for student help desk workers due to improved solution design
  • 50 percent reduction in NAC-related help desk calls during back-to-school (move-in) week
  • 97 percent reduction in wait time (from 90 days to 2 days) for support of new software and devices
  • Doubled NAC capacity to support 20,000 devices while reducing server count 7-Fold (from 21 to 3)
  • 86 percent reduction in power and cooling consumption energy costs
  • Eliminated 10 hours of unplanned downtime per month
