POINTE-CLAIRE, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - July 21, 2011) - It is today, in the presence of George Gate, Anne Myles, representing the Knox family, (and their families), members of municipal council, representatives of the 2011 Summer Swimming Nationals, athletes, politicians, officials, volunteers and employees; that the Mayor Bill McMurchie will officially inaugurate the opening of the Pointe-Claire Aquatic Centre.

We recall that the new Olympic 50-M 10-lane pool was inaugurated on September 27, 2010, by an official diver and Olympic champion, Émilie Heymans.

Today, most of the work has been completed. The Mayor has announced that the new aquatic centre will be renamed the Pointe-Claire Aquatic Centre to pay tribute to two outstanding personalities who contributed tremendously to the creation of the Aquatic Centre: Malcolm-Knox and George Gate. Two commemorative bronze plaques will be unveiled to these individuals as follows: the new 50-M 10-lane pool will be designated as the George Gate pool and the original completely renovated pool of 50-M 6-lane pool will be renamed the Malcolm-Knox pool. Miniature commemorative plaques were awarded to George Gate and Anne Myles, representing the Knox family.

The Mayor spoke with emotion and pride of Malcolm C. Knox, councillor and Mayor of Pointe-Claire for 28 years, with whom he served as a councillor for several years.

Councillor, Rob Geller, continued on to say, that he was member of the Pointe-Claire Swim Club from 1975 to 1981 and recalls the outstanding qualities of George Gate as a person as well as an outstanding trainer.

The Mayor concluded in saying that the «combination of these two personalities had an extraordinary impact on the quality of life in Pointe-Claire as we see it today».

The first indoor pool of 50-M in Canada was inaugurated in 1965, under the leadership of Mayor Arthur Séguin. The total cost of renovations including the new pool is now at $18 M.
