Increased odours and emissions resulting from maintenance at Suncor's oil sands operation

Fort McMurray, Alberta (September 8, 2006) - Suncor is informing the public of increased odours and emissions from its oil sands operations. Current odour issues are the result of maintenance work on the vapour recovery unit (VRU). This outage is scheduled to be completed on Saturday, Sept. 9.

Beginning Sept. 14, Suncor will begin a 14-day day maintenance outage on the fractionator in Upgrader 1. During the shut down and start up of the upgrader, there is potential for increased flaring, odours and emissions. The extent of the odours will depend on atmospheric conditions, such as wind direction and velocity.

Alberta Environment and local stakeholders have been informed. Concerns about odours and emissions may be directed to the Alberta Environment Hotline at 1-800-222-6514. Regional air quality information is available from the Wood Buffalo Environmental Association at or 799-4420.
