Increasing Oil & Gas Activity in Papua New Guinea Drives EMC's Expansion in Region

MIAMI, FL--(Marketwired - September 23, 2014) - Oil and Gas activity in Papua New Guinea has recently increased in the form of new liquefied natural gas (LNG) plants, exploration, land drilling and offshore production. Regional and international companies are making investments in blocks, building plants, camps and drilling sites, boosting the local economy.

These sites are often offshore in mountainous and/or jungle areas of the highland, making access difficult and communications delivery even harder.

Emerging Markets Communications (EMC) recognized an opportunity to provide satellite connectivity to these remote sites for the oil and gas industry in Papua New Guinea, expanding its services and in-country support for this region. The Papua New Guinea service is a core offering for EMC and includes a field support center in Port Moresby, where locally hired engineers will install and maintain VSAT connectivity services for the region. Like at all EMC support locations, these engineers will be available 24 x 7 to respond to service requests and will complete them within a previously established time frame.

EMC will ship inventory and equipment to its field support center, including modems, cables, routers and BUCs to accommodate existing customers and new opportunities more efficiently.

Case Study
An international oil and gas production company required connectivity for several rural drilling camps, located in the jungle of Papua New Guinea. The project was fast-tracked as reliable communications was vital to meeting the customer's timelines. Several challenges threatened the commissions of VSAT services, such as getting equipment through customs and licensing. However, EMC was able to overcome these challenges through its experience with license acquisition and customs clearance.

The communications solution provides voice, data and internet services for the corporate network and the crew members at the drilling site and within the camp. It was designed for mobile and fixed rigs, using C-Band satellite capacity landing in EMC's teleport in Hawaii, and a microwave network.

EMC's engineering, service delivery, account management and in-country field support teams managed to commission the services under industry standard time. The customer cited EMC's technical capability and ability to deploy quickly in a very challenging area to the success of this project.
