Indeck Energy: Wood Pellets Produce Less Ash Than Corn

LADYSMITH, WI--(Marketwire - March 10, 2011) - Consumers using corn as a home heating fuel may contend with more residual ash than other consumers who heat their homes using wood pellets.

Characteristics inherent in corn cause it to produce more ash than wood pellets.

"In addition to a higher ash content, corn tends to produce clinkers," said Mike Curci, Business Development Manager and Retail Sales Consultant, Indeck Energy. "Sugars and starch present in the corn melt together during combustion, harden and remain in the fire pot, decreasing the efficiency of the stove and causing the need for additional maintenance."

Consumers who burn alternative fuels for home heating are often forced to use a certain fuel based on its availability in their region. In the Great Lakes States, both corn and wood pellets are readily available for consumers.

"Indeck Energy Premium Wood Pellets produce less ash, have a high heat content, lower moisture content and put less stress on a stove when compared to corn," said Curci. "Quality fuel means less maintenance and fewer problems."

In addition to differences in their physical properties, corn and wood pellets often differ greatly in price. Corn is used in the production of ethanol, food and animal feed. Therefore its price is impacted by the volatility of the commodities market. The price of wood pellets generally remains more stable over time.

As of March 2011, corn is selling for a retail price of around $280 per ton -- translating to the consumer at about $20 per million BTU, a standard unit used to measure heat output.

Indeck Energy Premium Wood Pellets, at an average retail price of $200 per ton, would cost the same consumer $12.50 per million BTU. 

Consumers will save, on average, 37.5 percent by burning Indeck Energy Premium Wood Pellets rather than corn.
