Industrial Defender Selected by Royal Dutch Shell for Process Control Cyber Security Monitoring Solutions

Leading Oil and Gas Supplier to Implement Intrusion Detection System Technology to Mitigate Cyber Security Threats

FOXBOROUGH, MA--(Marketwire - July 14, 2009) - Industrial Defender, Inc., the global leader in Cyber Risk Protection™, today announced it has been selected by Royal Dutch Shell, a leader in the oil and gas industry, as its global process control cyber security monitoring solution provider. Under terms of the agreement, Industrial Defender's Intrusion Detection System (IDS) technology will be deployed at all of Shell's refineries to protect against cyber security threats to their production process.

In today's fast-paced business environment, mission critical process control, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and Distributed Control System (DCS) networks are now connected to corporate networks to improve business efficiencies and profitability. This is achieved by providing real time data access from production systems to business systems. Remote access to these industrial networks for employees and vendors is also an increasingly common trend intended to help improve operational efficiency.

Though these business efficiency gains can be good for business profitability, the reality is that they increasingly expose critical infrastructure networks to cyber security risks because of their potential vulnerabilities. In order to secure digital assets within industrial control and SCADA networks, it is critically important to create a layered Defense-in-Depth cyber security approach, which includes the use of IDS technology and monitors the network, specific computers and devices which reside on the network.

As the oil and gas industry is faced with a complex combination of regulatory, environmental, political and economic forces, preserving the high availability and reliability of these mission critical system installations is essential. That said, traditional corporate IT approaches to securing SCADA, DCS and process control environments run the risk of adversely impacting system integrity, availability and reliability.

"After a detailed technical evaluation, Royal Dutch Shell has selected Industrial Defender as its global process control cyber security monitoring solution provider," said Ted Angevaare, Shell Global Technology Leader Process Automation. "Based on our technical assessment process as well as the Company's proven track record of Defense-in-Depth risk mitigation capabilities specific to the SCADA / process control environment, Shell has deployed the Industrial Defender IDS solution as an integral component of our global production process cyber security strategy."

"We are thrilled that Royal Dutch Shell has selected Industrial Defender's technology to enhance the cyber security protection of their global plants," said Brian M. Ahern, President and CEO, Industrial Defender. "Shell is an example of a company taking the lead in implementing a sound cyber security strategy, which is absolutely vital toward protecting our global resources. For the oil and gas industry in particular, preserving the integrity of these mission critical systems is essential in order to mitigate the risks associated with business continuity, public safety, national security and our global economy."
