Industry Canada: Louis Brunel and Dr. Delwyn Fredlund Appointed to National Research Council Canada

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Nov. 17, 2005) - The Honourable David L. Emerson, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for the National Research Council Canada (NRC), today appointed Louis Brunel and Dr. Delwyn Fredlund to the NRC Governing Council for three-year terms.

"Mr. Brunel and Dr. Fredlund each bring to the Governing Council a wealth of experience and knowledge that will enable them to offer fresh new insights," said Minister Emerson. "Their combined expertise in telecommunications and research will enable the NRC to continue its growth and success in science and technology research."

For most of his career, Louis Brunel has held positions in the telecommunications and cable television industries. Mr. Brunel held the position of Director, Information Technology at the Universite de Montreal, the Universite du Quebec and at Quebecair. He spent 11 years as a senior executive for Le Groupe Videotron Ltee, working in Canada, Europe and the United States, and has since become President and CEO of the International Institute of Telecommunications.

Mr. Brunel holds a Bachelor's degree in mathematics and physics from the Universite de Montreal and holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales in Montreal.

Dr. Delwyn Fredlund has spent most of his career working for the University of Saskatchewan, devoting his time and efforts to research. Among his many contributions, Dr. Fredlund is responsible for developing a research program and organizing an internationally renowned research group on unsaturated soil mechanics. He has published numerous journal and conference research papers, and has been appointed Adjunct Professor at universities in Singapore and Hong Kong.

In 2004, Dr. Fredlund received the Order of Canada for his important contributions to geotechnical engineering in Canada as well as his dedication to helping others through his work for Canadian Food for the Hungry International. Dr. Fredlund earned his Bachelor of Engineering degree from the University of Saskatchewan. He then went on to earn his Master of Science degree and Ph.D. from the University of Alberta.
