Industry Canada: Wireless Number Portability Now Available in Canada

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - March 14, 2007) - Today the Honourable Maxime Bernier, Minister of Industry, applauded the announcement that wireless number portability (WNP) is now available in major urban communities across the country.

"WNP is a consumer-friendly initiative that will provide more choices to consumers and a more competitive service marketplace," said Minister Bernier. "It is in-line with our government's goal of reshaping the telecommunications sector to benefit consumers, and support an internationally competitive and robust industry here in Canada."

WNP will enable wireless phone service subscribers to change service providers and keep their existing phone numbers. It will also allow consumers to move a phone number from a wireline phone to a wireless phone and vice versa.

"I would like to congratulate all those involved, including the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA) and its providers, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) and the CRTC Interconnection Steering Committee (CISC) working groups for making WNP a reality," said Minister Bernier.

Further information on WNP can be found at the following websites: the CWTA home page for wireless number portability -; and, the CRTC Fact sheet for wireless telephone service

Wireless Number Portability

As of March 14, 2007, wireless service providers will make Wireless Number Portability (WNP) available to their customers. This means that customers will be able to switch to any service provider (wireline or wireless) and keep their phone number. Deployment of WNP will include wireless-to-wireless, wireless-to-wireline and wireline-to-wireless porting scenarios.

In the February 2005 federal budget, the government identified wireless number portability as a priority item. Also, in April 2005, the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association announced that Canada's wireless carriers agreed to implement number portability in Canada and began the planning efforts required to achieve this result.

In December 2005, the CRTC issued a decision requiring Canadian wireless telephone service providers to implement wireless number portability (WNP) by March 14, 2007, where local number portability is already in place.

WNP will be introduced in major urban centres across Canada by March 14, 2007. However, the service may not be immediately available in some regions. Service providers will be able to advise clients if they can provide WNP service in that region.
