Industry Minister James Moore Announces Appointment of Thomas Jenkins to the Council of the National Research Council of Canada


OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Dec. 19, 2013) - The Honourable James Moore, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for the National Research Council of Canada (NRC), today announced the appointment of Tom Jenkins to the NRC Council.

"Mr. Jenkins is well known for his innovative contributions to the Canadian high-technology sector," said Minister Moore. "His extensive knowledge and experience will bring a highly valued perspective to the work of the National Research Council of Canada."

"As chair of the panel responsible for reviewing federal investments in R&D, Mr. Jenkins provided us with expert advice that has been instrumental in developing our new approach to innovation, which will better position Canada as a world leader in today's knowledge ecosystem and strengthen our country's economy," said the Honourable Greg Rickford, Minister of State (Science and Technology).

Mr. Jenkins is the Chair of OpenText Corporation in Waterloo, Ontario. He is also an Executive Fellow at the School of Public Policy at the University of Calgary.

In 2011, Mr. Jenkins chaired the Expert Review Panel on Federal Support for Research and Development. The panel's recommendations helped inform the Government of Canada's commitment to improving its support for innovation in Canada. In 2013, Mr. Jenkins also led the panel that produced a report on defence procurement for the Government, which included recommendations to leverage support for Canadian industry.

Mr. Jenkins is a member of several other boards, including the Government of Canada's Advisory Panel on Open Government, the Canadian Digital Media Network, the C.D. Howe Institute and the Canadian Council of Chief Executives. He is also one of the founders of Communitech, Waterloo Region's technology association.

Mr. Jenkins holds a Master of Business Administration from the Schulich School of Business at York University, a Master of Applied Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Toronto and a Bachelor of Engineering Physics and Management from McMaster University.
