InfiniBand Taking Blade Servers by Storm

Mellanox to Address How Price/Performance, Low Power and Small Size Are Driving Market Acceptance of 10Gb/s Server Blade Clusters

SANTA CLARA, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- March 22, 2005 -- SERVER BLADE SUMMIT -- In a presentation titled InfiniBand: The Cool 10Gb/s Interconnect Solution for Red-Hot Server Blades, Thad Omura, director of product marketing at Mellanox Technologies, a leading provider of InfiniBand silicon solutions, will discuss why blade-server vendors are making InfiniBand the de facto 10Gb/s I/O standard in their systems. Omura will present during Session 104 of the Server Blade Summit on Wednesday, March 23 at 2 p.m.

Today's Only Choice Is the Right Choice

"By its very nature, InfiniBand is the ideal in-the-box and box-to-box 10 gigabit-per-second computing and storage interface," stated Omura. "As the only 10 gigabit-per-second server-blade interconnect technology in production, InfiniBand clearly hits the performance interconnect sweet spot from every point of view."

Compared to the cost and complexity of alternatives, InfiniBand has distinct advantages. For example, the recent announcement of Mellanox's InfiniHost III Lx PCI Express adapter device slashed InfiniBand implementation costs by more than an order of magnitude with significant power and size reductions. In addition, InfiniBand enables I/O and CPU virtualization, greatly increasing the efficiency and usage of clustered blade systems. Add to this the emergence of native InfiniBand storage solutions, and IT managers will soon realize the promise of a unified communications, computing and storage networked data center that is easy to manage and less costly to maintain.

Blade Server Vendors Have Chosen

Calling InfiniBand a de facto blade-server standard is no empty claim. At least eight leading blade-server vendors support this technology including: Appro's XtremeBlade solution, Ciara Technologies' VxRack, Dell's PowerEdge 1855, Hitachi's BladeSymphony, IBM's BladeCenter, Iwill's H2B, NEC's Express5800, and SBS Technologies' VMEBus System. Several other blade-server vendors will announce support later this year. A number of these solutions will be on display in Mellanox's Booth (#208) during exhibition hours of the Server Blade Summit.
