Infonetics Research: DSL, cable broadband CPE market up in 2Q, but slow subscriber growth clouds future

CAMPBELL, CA--(Marketwire - September 8, 2009) - Communications market research firm Infonetics Research released its second quarter (2Q09) Broadband CPE and Subscribers report. Highlights follow.

"Despite this quarter's increases in the broadband CPE market, the rest of 2009 looks murky, with DSL and cable broadband subscriber additions either decreasing or staying flat. Lack of subscriber growth is likely to be the biggest single impediment to sustained growth in CPE shipments and revenue this year. Longer-term growth will be driven by wideband cable CPE, VDSL CPE, and digital home gateways," notes Jeff Heynen, directing analyst for broadband and video at Infonetics Research.

BROADBAND CPE MARKET HIGHLIGHTS

-- In 2Q09, worldwide broadband customer premise equipment (CPE), including
DSL, cable, residential gateways, and voice CPE, totaled $1.04 billion,
   up 1% quarter-over-quarter
-- Growth in the quarter was driven by strong ADSL modem shipments in
China, a strong jump in VDSL broadband gateway shipments in North
America, and robust sales of wideband cable modems, broadband gateways,
and EMTAs worldwide as cable operators continue DOCSIS 3.0 service
   rollouts
-- Thomson and Motorola, with their breadth of CPE shipments to both DSL
and cable operators, continue to hold on to the top two spots worldwide,
   followed by ARRIS
