Infonetics Research: Ethernet switches up 4% in 3Q08; Cisco, D-Link, NETGEAR, Linksys post strong results

BOSTON, MA--(Marketwire - December 16, 2008) - Communications market research firm Infonetics Research reports worldwide sales of Ethernet switches grew 4% in 3Q08 over 2Q08 to $4.8 billion, led by strong 10G switch sales.

Infonetics' report, Ethernet and Application Switches shows the quarter was driven by revenue gains by market leader Cisco and exceptional results from others, including D-Link, NETGEAR, and Linksys.

Still, Ethernet switches face a tough road ahead during the economic downturn.

"What looks like a solid third quarter and a signal of bright days ahead for the Ethernet switch market is masking the larger economic uncertainties. Almost every vendor we talked to is concerned about the economy, and many are starting to see weakness in their businesses," said Infonetics Research's Matthias Machowinski, directing analyst for enterprise voice and data. "The long term outlook for the Ethernet switch market is sound, but you can't ignore the deteriorating economic situation -- fewer buyers, shrinking budgets, and a smaller workforce -- which will reduce the demand for switches in the near-term. Although the overall switch market is expected to be down in 2009, some segments will fare well, including 10G, 1G, and PoE switches."

Other highlights from the report:

-- Year-over-year from 3Q07 to 3Q08, 10G Ethernet switch ports are up 20%
-- Unmanaged fixed configuration Ethernet switch revenue is up 18% in
    3Q08
-- Worldwide application switch revenue decreased 2% in 3Q08 from 2Q08

Infonetics' report tracks 3Com/H3C, Adtran, Alcatel-Lucent, Blade, Cisco, Citrix Netscaler, D-Link, Extreme, F5, Force10, Foundry, Huawei, Linksys, NETGEAR, Nortel, ProCurve, Radware, SMC, and others. The report features flexible pivot tables and provides market size, market share, forecasts, and analysis for Ethernet switches (L2 and L3 managed and unmanaged fixed configuration switches and chassis switches) and PoE switches by form factor and speed, as well as application switches.
