Infonetics Research: Proliferation of spam and malicious code threats drive security market in 2Q08

CAMPBELL, CA--(Marketwire - September 10, 2008) - Communications market research firm Infonetics Research reports that the North American network security appliance and software market rebounded in 2Q08 after experiencing its first loss in over 4 years in 1Q08.

Infonetics' report, Network Security Appliances and Software, shows that all world regions increased network security spending in the 2nd quarter except Central and Latin America, with North America up 9% and Asia Pacific and EMEA (Europe, the Middle East and Africa) up as well. Total worldwide network security appliance and software revenue is up 6% sequentially to $1.4 billion as a result.

"Most network security vendors noted good growth in North America, and good pipelines for the rest of the year. Though the economy is still depressed overall, staggering increases in attack volume have forced companies to continue making new investments in security," said Jeff Wilson, principal analyst for network security at Infonetics Research.

Other highlights from the report:

-- Integrated appliances and software makes up 86% of all network
security revenue in 2Q08, IDS/IPS makes up 14%
-- Cisco leads the overall network security appliances and software
market with 40% worldwide revenue in 2Q08, led by their integrated
appliance and IDS/IP products due to large data center consolidation
projects and carrier rollouts (for mobile networks in particular)
-- Juniper is 2nd for total worldwide revenue in 2Q08, increasing their
revenue slightly due to continued strong performance in secure routers
-- TippingPoint rebounded from a nasty 1Q08 to post 35% quarter-over-
quarter growth in worldwide IDS/IPS product revenue
-- Secure routers and SSL VPN gateways are forecast to grow in the single-
to double-digit percents quarterly for the most part through 2011

Infonetics' report provides worldwide and regional market size and forecasts and worldwide market share for integrated security appliances in 6 price categories, secure routers, SSL VPN gateways, VPN and firewall software, and inline and traditional network-based intrusion detection and prevention (IDS/IPS) products.
