Information Builders Announces City of Richmond Police Department Named Winner of TDWI Best Practices Award

Richmond, VA Police Department's Use of WebFOCUS to Predict and Prevent Crime Receives Top Recognition for BI Use by a Government Agency

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - July 10, 2007) - Information Builders, the leader in production business intelligence (BI) solutions, today announced that the City of Richmond, Virginia, Police Department -- a longstanding customer demonstrating innovative use of Information Builders' WebFOCUS technology -- was named the co-winner of the 2007 TDWI Business Intelligence Best Practice Award in the Government and Non-Profit Solutions category.

TDWI [The Data Warehousing Institute] Best Practice Awards program is designed to recognize organizations that have demonstrated excellence in developing, deploying, and maintaining business intelligence and data warehousing (DW) applications. Winners are chosen by a panel of independent judges who have expertise in these areas.

"WebFOCUS has enabled us to capture and analyze crime data much more proficiently," said Rodney D. Monroe, chief of police, Richmond Police Department. "As a result, the technology has helped us deploy our officers where they would be most needed, which has reduced crime, but equally important reduced citizens calls and the dispatch of officers."

Using predictive analysis through business intelligence technology supported by dynamic geographic information system mapping, the Richmond Police Department has applied an information-based policy to predict the likelihood of crime and prevent future crimes from occurring. These solutions allow the city's crime analysts to look at the interaction between present and past data, such as arrest records, and type of crime at a particular location -- based on the day, time, weather, and the coincidence of public events. This insight enabled the city to knowledgeably deploy police resources to deter crime -- and as a result, crime was decreased by 49 percent, and the citizen reacted with fewer 911 calls that had to be serviced.

"Business intelligence technology is not just for the enterprise anymore," said Gerald Cohen, CEO of Information Builders. "This BI deployment by the City of Richmond shows that technology created for corporate America can prove equally effective in other real-world applications. Recognition by a well regarded organization like TDWI helps solidify the fact that our customers achieve truly remarkable results with their BI deployments."
