InformationWeek Names CollabNet-Powered Forge.mil One of the Most Innovative Government IT Projects

DoD's Collaborative Software Development Environment Selected as a "Compelling Example" of Cloud-Enabled IT Innovation

BRISBANE, CA--(Marketwire - September 18, 2009) - CollabNet, the leader in distributed application lifecycle management (ALM) solutions, announced today that Forge.mil, the CollabNet-powered collaborative software development environment launched last fall by the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA), the Department of Defense's information systems group, has been named to InformationWeek's list of the most innovative government IT projects. CollabNet TeamForge, the leading application lifecycle management platform for distributed software development teams, and CollabNet Subversion, the leading version control and software configuration management (SCM) solution for distributed teams, are at the heart of Forge.mil. The InformationWeek feature, part of the annual InformationWeek 500 report, is available here: http://www.informationweek.com/news/government/enterprise-architecture/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=219700410.

DISA's overall cloud computing effort seeks to reduce cost and overhead by moving to standard systems for common services, turning them into shared utilities. Specifically, for the Forge.mil initiative, DISA has enabled developers to rapidly combine elements of an enterprise platform to create new applications. By building Forge.mil on CollabNet's shared, yet secure, infrastructure, DISA is now able to allow lean collaboration by warfighters, program offices, and defense contractors in real time, reducing the cost and delay of prior set-piece programs, which delivered capabilities to the field in years, rather than months or weeks. An archived webcast covering the goals and objectives of Forge.mil and the incorporation of open source dynamics into software development at the Department of Defense is available at http://www.carahsoft.com/events/collabnet.php.

"The Forge.mil collaborative software development platform is one of DISA's first steps towards the vision of creating a centralized service that integrates stakeholders within the DoD network. CollabNet TeamForge and CollabNet Subversion bring the best practices of open source communities and lean software development processes to the DoD's software development efforts," said Bill Portelli, chief executive officer, CollabNet. "We're thrilled that the cloud-based breakthroughs and Forge.mil innovation that we helped to define and develop with the DISA team have been recognized by the InformationWeek editors."

CollabNet TeamForge provides Forge.mil users with a wide range of capabilities, including software version control, bug tracking, requirements management, and release packaging, along with collaboration tools such as wikis, discussion forums, and document repositories. The largest and most successful open source software communities in the world, including java.net, openoffice.org, and tigris.org, are also based on CollabNet TeamForge.

CollabNet partnered with Carahsoft, a trusted government IT solutions provider, to deliver TeamForge to DISA for the Forge.mil initiative. Carahsoft delivers CollabNet-powered solutions to the Department of Defense under an ESI Blanket Purchase Agreement for Open Source Solutions.

The first-launched Forge.mil property was SoftwareForge, a collaborative environment for shared development of open source and DoD community source software. SoftwareForge is currently in Initial Operational Capability (IOC) for unclassified use and has Interim Authority To Operate (IATO) on SIPRNet, the DoD's classified version of the civilian Internet.

Four more components of Forge.mil are expected to launch later this year: CertificationForge, which will support agile certification; ProjectForge, which will provide project portals; StandardsForge, which will drive collaborative standards development; and TestForge, which will provide on-demand software testing tools.
