Key features of Infortrend's storage systems that help to achieve sustainable data storage include storage virtualization and thin provisioning, as well as numerous hardware features.

In traditional direct-attached storage (DAS) environments storage utilization is approximately 30 percent, and in storage area network (SAN) environments utilization is often still no more than 50 percent, as the free capacity dispersedly located on different physical resources cannot be consolidated for use. Storage virtualization aggregates the resources of different physical storage resources into a single storage pool. In addition, the thin provisioning technology on Infortrend's storage systems allocates just-in-time free space to applications when data is written and eliminates allocated but unused space. Capacity utilization can therefore be optimized up to 80-90 percent.

This increase in storage utilization significantly improves the energy efficiency of storage systems, as more can be done with the same energy resources. In addition, increased utilization can extend the lifespan of a storage system, reducing unnecessary hardware waste and helping enterprises lower costs.

Furthermore, many hardware features improve energy efficiency. Infortrend's storage systems include 80 PLUS-certified power supplies, which deliver more than 80 percent energy efficiency. Intelligent multi-level drive spin-down technology helps reduce the power consumption of individual disk drives in storage systems by up to 65 percent.

Infortrend also offers a large number of small-form-factor (SFF) systems that accommodate 2.5" disk drives. These drives consume 40 percent less power per IO than 3.5" drives, and SFF systems reduce the physical space and energy needed for storage systems. Meanwhile, SSDs (Solid State Drives) supported by Infortrend systems consume 80 percent less power per IO than traditional 3.5" drives, while offering significantly better performance.

Infortrend is also in compliance with major international environmental regulations such as Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) and Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE).
