INFORUM Hosts the NBA's Jason Collins: First Out Athlete in Major American Pro Sports

Collins Will Be Joined in Conversation With Jose Antonio Vargas

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwired - Jul 29, 2014) - INFORUM, The Commonwealth Club's Innovation Lab, will be hosting a discussion with the first ever active, publicly gay pro athlete to play in any of the four major American pro sports leagues -- professional NBA player, Jason Collins. On Monday, Aug. 11, Jason Collins joins INFORUM for a discussion conducted by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and immigration activist Jose Antonio Vargas at the Castro Theatre.

Described as the ultimate teammate and the consummate professional, Jason Collins has attained great success in his 14-year career. In April 2013, Collins came out as gay, becoming the first active, publicly gay athlete to play in any of the four major American pro sports leagues. Since coming out, Collins has been prominently featured in the public spotlight and has endured both the best and the worst of the sports world.

Collins will be joined in conversation with Jose Antonio Vargas, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, filmmaker, activist and founder of the nonprofit Define American. In 2011, after seven years as a journalist, Vargas came out to his employers and to the public as an undocumented worker. Vargas refers to it as his second time coming out, after coming out as gay in 1999. Vargas will draw from Collins' experiences to discuss the similarities that each are facing today. This program is part of the 2014 Platforum series, The LGBT Journey, sponsored by Ernst & Young.

"We bring courageous and inspiring newsmakers to San Francisco to tell their side of the story and to discuss what you may or may not know from the headlines," said Caroline Moriarity Sacks, INFORUM Director. "We're excited to bring you this exclusive interview from one of the best journalists of our time and the man who made it okay to be gay in sports."

This conversation will take place at the Castro Theatre on Monday, Aug. 11, at 6:30 p.m. PT. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit: http://www.commonwealthclub.org/events/featured-programs/inforum.
