Inmarsat Chooses Apigee to Power App Development Across World's First Globally Available High-Speed Mobile Broadband Service

Apigee's Digital Platform Enables Groundbreaking Satellite Communications Project

SAN JOSE, CA--(Marketwired - Mar 5, 2014) - Apigee today announced that Inmarsat, the leading provider of global mobile satellite communications services, has chosen Apigee's API (application programming interface) platform to enable Inmarsat's Certified Application Providers (CAPs) to develop apps that harness the power of Global Xpress®, a game-changing high-speed, globally available mobile broadband service.

Inmarsat launched the first of three Inmarsat-5 satellites in December 2013, with the second and third Global Xpress (GX) satellites scheduled to be launched during the course of 2014. Inmarsat's fleet of three high throughput satellites will offer a unique combination of seamless global Ka-band coverage from a single operator, consistent higher performance of up to 50Mbps to mobile or fixed terminals, and the network reliability for which Inmarsat is renowned.

Apigee will enable Inmarsat to open up its APIs to its CAPs. The technology allows Inmarsat's partners to build applications for their market sectors with the GX network's significantly higher bandwidth, offering a completely new scope for the delivery of services and applications.

Apigee will provide the API management and creation layer. Inmarsat will use the Apigee Edge cloud-based service as a quick-start approach to get Inmarsat's CAPs 'up and running' with their APIs, as well as creating new APIs from the data exposed.

The Apigee platform for digital acceleration is designed to help companies of all sizes succeed in today's digital world by integrating predictive big data analytics with an adaptive digital infrastructure. Today, hundreds of enterprises use Apigee, including 20 percent of the Fortune 100 and nearly half of the top 100 global brands.

David Schoen, Vice President, Product & Service Development at Inmarsat, says: "Global Xpress is a ground-breaking development in global broadband connectivity, funded by our $1.6bn investment into the next generation of high-throughput satellites and network infrastructure. To open our network securely for Certified Application Providers, we need a partner with a proven API development platform and strong experience in the telecommunications industry.

"Apigee's experience and go-to-market capability were important factors and their fast start approach through cloud deployment allows us to work with our partners immediately, as we integrate their on-premise solution seamlessly into our Service Enablement Platform and developer portal."

Jeremy Perlman, MD EMEA at Apigee, says: "We are working with Inmarsat to provide its partners with access to back-end data in order to create new apps that exploit the incredible broadband speeds offered by Global Xpress. This provides us with an opportunity to be part of something truly revolutionary in the world of mobile services.

"Most home broadband speeds lag some way behind the 50Mbps Inmarsat will offer -- this breakthrough will transform businesses by allowing a seamless transition between in-the-office and on-the-go. The apps developed through our developer portal will help bridge the gap that still ties many employees at even the most successful enterprises to their desk."
