Inmate Assault at Port-Cartier Institution


PORT-CARTIER, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Aug. 1, 2012) - On July 31, 2012, at approximately 8:30 p.m., an inmate was assaulted at Port-Cartier Institution, a maximum security federal penitentiary.

The injured inmate was immediately assessed by staff and taken to an outside hospital. The victim is reported in stable condition. No staff or other inmates were injured during this incident.

The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) will be conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident and will continue to work in collaboration with the police.

Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff, and the public remains the highest priority in the operations of the CSC.

In order to improve its practices to prevent and reduce future incidents, CSC will continue to work in an effort to review the circumstances surrounding the incident and take action where necessary.
