Innovators of Packet Capture and Analysis Participate in Live Q&A

Creators of TCPDUMP, WinPcap and Wireshark Gather on Twitter

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - May 18, 2011) - Riverbed Technology (NASDAQ: RVBD), the IT performance company, today announced a live Twitter event featuring the creators of TCPDUMP, WinPcap® and Wireshark®, on Tuesday, May 24 at 11:00 AM PDT. During this event, Steve McCanne, co-creator of TCPDUMP, Loris Degioanni, creator of WinPcap, and Gerald Combs, creator of Wireshark, will share their stories of how their groundbreaking technologies were conceived. This special event will provide an opportunity for the audience to participate in a Q&A session with the three innovators of packet capture and analysis. Twitter users can submit questions by using the hashtag #packetcap.

Quotes and Facts:

  • "We created this live Q&A session on a popular social media platform to allow people to learn more about the evolution and future of packet capture and analysis," said Bob Gilbert, director of marketing at Riverbed. "We've seen a lot of interest on this topic from customers, partners and fans of open source and wanted to gather the three innovative minds in one room to share their experiences and plans for the future around these technologies."

  • In the late 1980s, Steve McCanne, co-founder and chief technology officer at Riverbed® and co-creator of TCPDUMP, wanted to find a reliable method to capture and efficiently analyze only the necessary network traffic, which led to the creation of TCPDUMP.

  • In the late 1990s, Loris Degioanni, senior director of engineering at Riverbed and the creator of WinPcap, was a student at Politecnico di Torino in Italy and wanted to create a tool to capture network traffic from students' Windows machines. Ultimately it led to the creation of WinPcap, an open source Windows capture library based on libpcap.

  • During the same time in the 1990s, Gerald Combs, director of open source projects at Riverbed, started a weekend project based on a desire to find a more robust approach to analyze packet captures. Thus, Wireshark was born.

In late 2010, Riverbed acquired CACE Technologies, which led to all three innovators of packet capture and analysis joining together to continue the advancement of network performance management (NPM) solutions that provide enterprises advanced end-to-end visibility and analysis for network and application performance.
