Installation Ceremony for New Canadian Forces Chaplain General

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 12, 2010) - Brigadier-General, the Venerable, Karl McLean, who was appointed Chaplain General of the Canadian Forces (CF) on September 1, 2010, was installed during an installation ceremony that took place today at the Notre Dame Cathedral Basilica in Ottawa.

"I am pleased to welcome Brigadier-General McLean to the position of Canadian Forces Chaplain General," said the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence. "The new Chaplain General brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to his position and will serve as an excellent chief spiritual advisor to Canadian Forces members and their families."

"The physical, mental, and spiritual well-being of our members is very important to the Canadian Forces," said General Walt Natynczyk, Chief of the Defence Staff. "In this position, Brigadier-General McLean will be able to lead spiritual growth and development of all of the Canadian Forces."

The installation ceremony was celebrated jointly by the Interfaith Committee on the Canadian Military Chaplaincy (ICCMC) and the Department of National Defence. The role of presiding over the ceremony was shared among the members of the ICCMC. Official representatives from the CF also took part in the ceremony.

The Chaplain General heads the multi-faith chaplain branch and advises the Chief of the Defence Staff and the Chief of Military Personnel on matters related to the moral and spiritual well-being of personnel and their families in all aspects of their lives. He or she normally serves a two-year term and is responsible for recruiting, training, and managing the ministry of chaplains within the CF. The position alternates between Protestant and Roman Catholic.
