Intelligence Squared U.S. Audience Confirms in Landslide Vote: Islam Is Dominated by Radicals

Live Audience Has Dramatic Vote Shift to Agree With the Presented Motion

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - April 16, 2008) - Intelligence Squared U.S., the Oxford style, three-on-three debate series sponsored by The Rosenkranz Foundation, announced the results of Tuesday night's debate on the motion, "Islam is dominated by radicals." A sold out audience at Asia Society and Museum, New York City voted 73% for the motion and 23% against at the conclusion of the debate. 4% were undecided.

Speaking for the motion were Daveed Gartenstein-Ross, vice president of research at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, and the author of "My Year Inside Radical Islam," Paul Marshall, senior fellow at the Hudson Institute's Center for Religious Freedom and Asra Q. Nomani, professor in the practice of journalism at Georgetown University and author of "Standing Alone: An American Woman's Struggle for the Soul of Islam." Reza Aslan, author of the bestselling, "No god but God: The Origins, Evolution, and Future of Islam" and fellow at the University of Southern California's Center on Public Diplomacy, Richard W. Bulliet, professor of history at Columbia University and author and editor of numerous books, including, "The Case for Islamo-Christian Civilization," "Islam: The View from the Edge" and "The Columbia History of the Twentieth Century," and Edina Lekovic, director of communications for the Muslim Public Affairs Council spoke against. Robert Siegel, a senior host of NPR's award-winning evening newsmagazine "All Things Considered," served as moderator.

"It's rare to see such a large shift in the voting numbers, especially on such a contentious issue," said Robert Rosenkranz, chairman of The Rosenkranz Foundation. "All of our debaters did a great job arguing their points with clarity, precision and humor."

Intelligence Squared U.S. polls its audience on each motion before and after the debate. At the start of Tuesday's debate, the audience voted 46% for the motion that "Islam is dominated by radicals," with 32% against and 22% undecided.
