Intelligence Squared U.S. Debates "The FDA'S Caution Is Hazardous To Our Health" at Kaufman Center, May 8th

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - April 22, 2013) - Intelligence Squared U.S. (IQ2US) will continue its sold out run of Spring 2013 debates on Wednesday, May 8th with "The FDA'S Caution Is Hazardous To Our Health." The Food and Drug Administration, the oldest comprehensive consumer protection agency in the U.S. federal government, is charged with protecting the public health. Under this mandate, it regulates drugs and medical devices for their safety and effectiveness. But is it a failing mandate? It's long been argued that the FDA's long and costly approval processes stifle innovation and keep life-changing treatments from the market. But the question remains: when it comes to public health, is it ever okay to sacrifice safety for speed?

Dr. Scott Gottlieb, Resident Fellow at American Enterprise Institute with Peter Huber, Senior Fellow at the Manhattan Institute and author will argue for the motion. Dr. Jerry Acorn, Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School with Dr. David Challoner, V.P. for Health Affairs Emeritus at the University of Florida will argue against the motion.

Intelligence Squared U.S.'s spring season debates are streamed live on Debates also air on more than 220 NPR stations nationwide and are televised nationally on PBS and in the New York area on WNET/Thirteen, WLIW, and NJTV.
