International Billfish Tournament Makes a Splash at the Courtyard King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel

Spectators and Fishermen Flock to This Kona Beach Hotel to See Who Can Catch the Biggest Fish

KAILUA-KONA, HI--(Marketwired - Aug 8, 2016) - At the Courtyard King Kamehameha, the glittering ocean offers more than just a stunning view. Its perfect azure waves also promise plenty of big fish to catch. And from July 30 to August 6, 2016, teams from around the world arrive at this Big Island hotel to see who can catch the biggest one when they compete in the 57th-annual Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament.

The opening ceremony at the Kailua Pier on Sunday, July 31 offered an opportunity for event participants, visitors and community members to gather amid music and celebration. The competition officially got underway the following day with the Governor's trophy up for grabs.

Few places afford a vantage point from which to watch the action like this Kona hotel. Not only is it the headquarters for the tournament, it also presides over the event as boats line up each morning along Kailua Bay at 8 a.m. and return in the afternoon to weigh each catch and post the results.

The hotel's oceanfront location in Kona, however, is just the first of many features tournament guests will appreciate. Combining contemporary style with a distinctly Hawaiian sensibility, this full-service hotel caters to visitors in every way. There are lofty guest rooms outfitted with free Wi-Fi, private balconies and an unmistakable aloha spirit. There are opportunities to explore the local culture, like the Island Breeze Luau, and there are ways to simply relax, from spa treatments to the on-site yoga studio.

The hotel also ensures guests can experience the many exciting things to do in Kona. After watching the tournament boats take off for the day, for example, guests may take to the water to try stand-up paddle boarding or snorkeling, courtesy of the hotel's on-site water sports vendor. Or they can set off to explore the island's rich natural beauty, including the world's most active volcano.

One thing no one will want to miss, however, is the result of the competition. Last year, Team Likeke took home the trophy for the U.S. with an Australian team winning second place. On August 6, 2016, a new winner will earn serious bragging rights -- and officially become the biggest fish in the pond.
